The route leaves Bordeaux first following the Garonne through the Graves vineyards, before reaching the official start of the Canal latéral à la Garonne at Castets-en-Dorthe, completed in 1856 to offer a reliable alternative to sailing the river, notorious for its strong current and shifting shallows.

Langon, a small town at the heart of the Sauternes and Graves wine country, makes a good stop midway through, with several wine estates reachable a few kilometres from the greenway.

Arriving in La Réole, a former medieval city perched above the Garonne with its Romanesque town hall, one of the oldest in France, offers a striking architectural contrast with the rural landscape crossed so far.
