On the South Downs above Brighton, Ditchling Beacon owes its fame to its role as the highlight of the London to Brighton Bike Ride rather than to impressive stats — a cult climb of grassroots British cycling.
A short but punchy climb
From Brighton, it’s 1.45 km for 143 m of elevation gain, averaging around 9.7%, with sections reaching 16%. The summit, at 248 m, is the highest point in East Sussex.
The highlight of the London to Brighton Bike Ride
Every year, tens of thousands of amateur cyclists tackle Ditchling Beacon during the London to Brighton Bike Ride, a charity ride organised by the British Heart Foundation. The climb also has a competitive history, used during the English stages of the 1994 Tour de France and the 2014 Tour of Britain, and hosting the British National Hill Climb Championship in 1995.
When to go
Year-round — the road stays rideable with no snow constraints, though the site remains exposed to wind on this South Downs plateau.
Good to know
Brighton, a lively south-coast city, and the village of Ditchling on the other side, make two complementary starting points for exploring the South Downs by bike.
