Just minutes from central Bastia, the Étang de Biguglia is Corsica’s largest lagoon: a flat, protected nature reserve separated from the sea by a strip of dunes, offering one of the few cycling routes on the island genuinely suited to young children.

A flat loop around the lagoon

The route mixes cycle path and quiet small roads around the lagoon, covering roughly 20 km with no notable elevation change. The scenery shifts between reed beds, coastal dunes and open views over the water, with several viewing points along the way for a break partway around.

It’s one of the few family-friendly routes on the Corsican coast that combines a short distance, flat terrain and genuine wildlife interest, a world away from the mountainous image usually associated with the island.

Getting the ride right

The flat terrain and generally decent surface make this manageable from a young age in a trailer or child seat, and straightforward for kids already riding on their own. Sun protection is still worth packing — the open stretches around the lagoon offer little shade around midday.

When to go

April to October, with spring and early autumn best for spotting migratory birds and for milder temperatures than midsummer.

Good to know

Bastia, Corsica’s second-largest city and a main ferry gateway to the island, offers a wide choice of accommodation and easy access to the nearby Cap Corse peninsula to extend the trip.

Frequently asked questions

Can you spot birds along the route?+

Yes, the Étang de Biguglia is a protected nature reserve and an important migratory stopover on the Mediterranean flyway. Flamingos, herons and various wading birds can be spotted depending on the season, especially early in the morning.

Is the route shaded?+

Only partly. Some stretches run in the open along the lagoon, so the ride is more comfortable outside the hottest hours of the day in summer.
