Linking counties Cork and Kerry across the Caha Mountains, Healy Pass unwinds its iconic switchbacks through the heart of the Beara Peninsula, one of Ireland’s most photographed cycling roads.
A scenic climb between two counties
From Adrigole, on the Cork side, it’s 7.5 km for 330 m of elevation gain up to the summit, averaging a moderate 4.5% that steepens through the tight final switchbacks before the pass. The narrow but quiet road opens up clear views over the surrounding glacial valleys throughout the climb.
The highlight of the Ring of Beara
Healy Pass marks the high point of the Ring of Beara, a cycling route that circles the peninsula and alternates coastal roads with mid-mountain climbs. The pass links Adrigole, on the Cork side, to Lauragh, on the Kerry side, offering an equally memorable descent on the far side.
Getting the ride right
A packable waterproof layer is worth keeping in the bag even under clear skies at the start — Atlantic-driven showers can arrive within minutes on this west-facing slope.
When to go
April to October, with summer offering the longest days and the most stable conditions for enjoying the views over the Caha Mountains and Bantry Bay in the distance.
Good to know
Castletownbere, a lively fishing port nearby, offers the widest choice of accommodation and restaurants in the area for extending the exploration of the Beara Peninsula after the climb.
