Made up of more than 6,500 islands and islets between Sweden and Finland, the autonomous Åland archipelago seems built for cycling: almost no relief, a network of bridges and ferries linking the inhabited islands, and so little motor traffic it barely registers.
An archipelago built for island-hopping
From Mariehamn, the archipelago’s capital, several routes let you reach neighbouring islands by bike, combining quiet roads, bridges and ferry crossings. The archipelago ferries, run by the local operator Ålandstrafiken, take bikes and passengers with no real hassle and serve islands such as Föglö, where the small village of Degerby charms visitors with its colourful fishermen’s houses and tidy gardens.
The “Big Archipelago Loop,” which strings together several of these ferry connections over multiple days all the way to the remote island of Kökar, is a more ambitious option for families after a genuine island adventure. But a simple day loop around Mariehamn and the main island is already enough to enjoy the essence of Åland’s charm.
How to approach the ride
The archipelago’s flat terrain makes a family outing easy without any particular training. The main thing to plan around is ferry logistics: check the Ålandstrafiken timetable before setting off and build in some margin, since some island connections run less often outside peak season.
The roads, very quiet outside the immediate vicinity of Mariehamn, offer a reassuring setting for riding with young children, even on stretches without a dedicated cycle path.
When to go
The ideal window runs from June to August, when the long days of the Nordic summer and more frequent ferry connections let you make the most of the archipelago. The climate stays cool despite the latitude, so a windproof layer is worth packing even in summer.
Good to know
Mariehamn, the archipelago’s only real town, has the largest concentration of bike rental shops and accommodation. It’s possible to bring your own bike on the ferry connecting mainland Finland or Sweden to Åland, a practical option for families travelling from further afield.
