Lake Lipno, the largest body of water in the Czech Republic, offers one of South Bohemia’s most complete family bike rides, between a flat lakeside cycle path and a spectacular treetop walkway.
A flat path along the largest Czech lake
From Lipno nad Vltavou, the cycle path follows the lakeshore toward Frymburk and then Černá v Pošumaví, offering continuous views of the water with the wooded hills of the Šumava in the background. Expect around 25 km for a loop representative of the region, on a route that’s almost entirely flat and separated from car traffic.
Getting the family ride right
With barely 150 m of cumulative elevation gain, this ride poses no difficulty and suits kids pedalling on their own. The Stezka korunami stromů, an elevated walkway above the forest with an observation tower and slide, makes a must-see stop easily reached from the cycle path.
When to go
May to September, with summer offering the chance to combine the ride with a swim in the lake or a watersports session. Early autumn, quieter, lets you enjoy the site in relative calm.
Good to know
Lipno nad Vltavou and Frymburk offer a wide choice of family-oriented accommodation, with convenient access to the nearby Austrian border for extending the stay in the Šumava region.
