Masuria, nicknamed the “land of a thousand lakes,” offers one of Poland’s most peaceful family bike rides: a network of country lanes and cycle paths running alongside dozens of lakes linked by navigable canals.
A flat loop between lakes and canals
From Giżycko, the region’s liveliest town, the path follows the shores of Lake Niegocin toward Mikołajki and then Ruciane-Nida, crossing a landscape of forest and meadow typical of Masuria. Expect around 30 km for a loop representative of the region, on a route that’s almost entirely flat, alternating country lanes with dedicated cycle paths.
Getting the family ride right
With barely 150 m of cumulative elevation gain over the whole route, this ride poses no difficulty and suits kids pedalling on their own. Giżycko’s swing bridge, which opens several times a day to let boats through, offers a fun break popular with younger riders.
When to go
May to September, with summer offering the chance to combine the ride with a swim in one of the region’s many lakes. Pleasure-boat traffic, heavier in peak season, brings pleasant life to the canals the path crosses.

Giżycko offers a wide choice of accommodation and convenient train access from Warsaw, about three hours away, with Mikołajki, a lively lakeside resort on Lake Śniardwy, for extending the stay in Masuria.
