On the border between Carinthia and Styria, Turracher Höhe climbs toward one of Austria’s most feared passes, through the rounded landscape of the Nockberge range.
A sustained climb from Predlitz
From Predlitz, it’s about 9 km for 600 m of elevation gain, averaging close to 9%, with notably steeper sections near the top. The summit tops out at 1,783 m, beside a mountain lake.
Austria’s steepest paved pass
The direct Carinthian side of Turracher Höhe, through the Kringe section, reaches gradients of 23% on paved road, officially making it the steepest paved road in the country, a challenge sought out by many cyclists.
How to approach the ride
A very easy gear is essential to absorb the steepest sections without burning out too early, keeping a steady cadence rather than forcing through the final switchbacks.
When to climb it
May to October, as the road can stay closed or slippery outside this window given the altitude and winter conditions in the Nockberge range.
Good to know
The pass combines easily with the nearby Nockalmstrasse for a full ride through the range, or with a break beside Lake Turrach at the summit.
