Along the Rhine, between Strasbourg and Sélestat, the Rhine Cycle Route unwinds a flat, safe cycle path through the Rhine forest, one of the easiest family outings in Alsace.
A flat path along the river
From Strasbourg, a comfortable stretch of about 50 km follows the Rhine as far as the Sélestat area, with barely 30 m of cumulative elevation gain over the whole distance. The dedicated, well-signposted path alternates between asphalt sections and compacted trail shaded by the Rhine forest.
A stretch of EuroVelo 15
This Alsace section forms part of EuroVelo 15, the cycling route that follows the Rhine for over 1,300 km from its Swiss source to the North Sea. In Alsace, the route benefits from long-established, particularly well-finished infrastructure, a benchmark for family-friendly cycling.
Getting the ride right
A trailer or child seat makes it possible to bring the youngest riders along the full length of the route, since the flat, even surface poses no particular technical difficulty.
When to go
April to October, with the Rhine forest offering welcome shade even on the hottest summer days.
Good to know
Strasbourg, easily reached by train, offers the widest choice of accommodation and makes it easy to combine the ride with exploring the city, while several ferries provide an easy way to reach neighbouring Germany.
