This stage crosses Montélimar, a town world-famous for its nougat, before following a stretch of the Rhône shaped by several large hydroelectric dams built in the 20th century, whose reservoirs create an unusually lake-like landscape for the river.

Bourg-Saint-Andéol, a small town at the foot of spectacular limestone cliffs, marks the symbolic entry into Provençal scenery: scrubland, olive trees and increasingly southern light as the route heads further south.

Arriving in Pont-Saint-Esprit, famous for its medieval bridge nearly 1,000 metres long spanning the Rhône, also marks the entry into the Gard department and the start of the route’s southernmost stretch.
