The Compiègne forest, a former royal and imperial hunting ground, spans over 14,000 hectares between the Oise and Aisne départements. A massif steeped in history — the Clairière de l’Armistice is its best-known site — that also offers some of the best mountain biking terrain north of the Paris Basin.
A hilly, wooded massif
From Compiègne, the dense network of forest tracks allows for a route of around 35 km and 400 m of cumulative climbing, on terrain that alternates wide fire roads with narrower, sometimes sandy or root-covered trails. A detour to the Clairière de l’Armistice, reachable with a short diversion, adds a historical dimension to the ride.
Getting the ride right
The soil, sandy in places, can get heavier after prolonged rain — a mudguard isn’t overkill outside summer. Trail markings are generally good, making it easy to piece together your own route at whatever level you’re after.
When to go
March to November, avoiding the autumn hunting season when some parts of the forest can be temporarily closed — worth checking locally before heading out at that time of year.

Compiègne, an imperial town with rich architectural heritage, has a wide choice of accommodation, with convenient access to the Château de Pierrefonds to extend the trip with some history.
