A former crossing point between Austria and Slovenia before the Karawanken road tunnel was built, the Wurzenpass climbs from Thörl-Maglern on a narrow, sustained road through the Carnic Alps.
A short but demanding climb
From Thörl-Maglern, it’s 8.5 km for 750 m of elevation gain up to the pass, averaging 8.8% with barely a flat stretch to be found, and sections nearing 16% through the middle of the climb.
A historic pass turned quiet road
Long the main route between Carinthia and Slovenia’s Upper Carniola, the Wurzenpass lost its through-traffic status to the Karawanken road tunnel, which now makes it a peaceful climb, valued for its wooded surroundings and light traffic.

When to go
May to October — the road can remain closed or snow-covered in winter given the pass’s altitude and exposure.
