From Redon, the route leaves the Vilaine to follow the Oust, canalised for much of its length to form the backbone of the canal. The towpath passes through Malestroit, a small town of character with timber-framed houses worth a stop, before continuing upstream.
A detour of around ten kilometres leads to Rochefort-en-Terre, a village listed among the “most beautiful villages of France”, perched on a rocky spur — off the canal’s direct line, but a welcome side trip for cyclists in no hurry.
The stage ends in Josselin, dominated by its 11th-16th century feudal castle, one of the most impressive in Brittany, its towers reflected directly in the waters of the Oust.
