The Colline del Prosecco, between Valdobbiadene and Conegliano, offer a unique gravel terrain: a UNESCO-listed wine-growing landscape, shaped into steep terraced slopes over centuries, between farm tracks and ridge paths.
Hilly terrain between rows of vines
From Valdobbiadene, the tracks head into the hills toward San Pietro di Barbozza and then Conegliano, alternating dirt paths between the terraced rows of vines (the “ciglioni”) with a few more technical ridge-path sections, inherited from old WWI-era military routes. Expect around 35 km and 700 m of elevation gain for a loop representative of the region.
Getting the ride right
Versatile gravel tyres around 38-42mm suit most of the route, between packed tracks through the vineyards and more technical sections on the ridge paths. The profile, made up of short, repeated kicks rather than continuous climbing, works the legs differently from a standard road ride.
When to go
April to June and September to November, with the September harvest bringing a special atmosphere as vineyard activity is visible from the tracks. Summer, hotter and busier with wine tourism, is less suited to long rides.
Good to know
Valdobbiadene and Conegliano, the historic heartland of Prosecco production, offer a wide choice of accommodation and wineries to visit, with convenient access to Treviso for extending the stay beyond cycling.
