Family

The Nemunas Delta, on the border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, offers one of Lithuania’s most unusual family bike rides: a landscape of flat polders and dikes shaped by Dutch engineers, laced with canals and visited by hundreds of thousands of migrating birds.

A flat loop through polders and canals

From Rusnė, an island linked to the mainland by a bridge, dike roads cross a polder landscape for about 33 km toward Ventė and Šilutė, through a checkerboard of drainage canals and wet meadows typical of this delta. The route, almost entirely flat, presents no real difficulty.

How to approach the ride with kids

With barely 40 m of total elevation gain, this ride suits children pedaling on their own perfectly well. The main challenge is wind, often present on these open lands near the Curonian Lagoon, which can make some stretches trickier than they look.

When to go

April to October, with two especially good windows for birdwatching: spring and, above all, autumn, when tens of thousands of birds pass through Ventė Cape daily.

Good to know

The Ventės Ragas bird-ringing station, active since 1929, can be visited and has information panels on ringing techniques. Šilutė, the region’s liveliest town with its Prussian-influenced half-timbered houses, offers the widest choice of lodging and shops.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Nemunas Delta so flat?+

This delta, formed where the Nemunas River meets the Curonian Lagoon, was partly drained and diked starting in the 19th century by engineers from the Netherlands, who built a network of polders and drainage canals still in use today — in places the land sits below the level of the river.

What is the Ventės Ragas bird-ringing station?+

Founded in 1929 by Lithuanian naturalist Tadas Ivanauskas, it's one of the oldest bird-ringing stations in Europe and is still active today. Ventė Cape sits on a major migration corridor between Scandinavia and central Europe, with hundreds of thousands of birds recorded each year in spring and autumn.
