Family

Trakai, the former capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania about 30 km from Vilnius, offers one of the country’s most pleasant family bike rides: a flat loop between three lakes, beneath an iconic island castle.

A flat loop between lakes and forest

From central Trakai, the path follows the shores of Lake Galvė, Lake Totoriškių and Lake Bernardinų for about 20 km, through a landscape of pine forest and meadows typical of Lithuania’s lake district. The route alternates quiet back roads with dedicated lakeside bike paths.

How to approach the ride with kids

With about 130 m of total elevation gain over the whole route, the ride presents no difficulty and suits children pedaling on their own. Trakai Island Castle, reached on foot via a footbridge at the end of the loop, makes for a cultural stop that young riders tend to enjoy.

When to go

May to September, with summer allowing a swim in Lake Galvė to round off the ride. The Karaite quarter, lively year-round, is especially pleasant on a warm afternoon on a terrace.

Good to know

Trakai is an easy 30-minute train or bus ride from Vilnius, making it a simple day trip to organize. Save room for kibinai, the meat-filled pastries typical of the local Karaite community.

Frequently asked questions

What is Trakai Island Castle?+

Built in the 14th and 15th centuries by the Grand Dukes of Lithuania on a small island in Lake Galvė, this red-brick castle was Vytautas the Great's residence before falling into ruin and being fully restored in the 20th century. It's now one of the country's most photographed landmarks, reached on foot by a footbridge at the end of the loop.

Who are the Karaites of Trakai?+

This Turkic-speaking, Karaite-faith minority was settled in Trakai in the 14th century by Vytautas the Great to serve as his personal guard. Their traditional quarter along Karaimų Street still has wooden houses with distinctive three-window facades, and serves kibinai, the community's traditional stuffed pastries.
