Kakopetria, a mountain village of preserved stone and timber-framed houses, makes an ideal base for exploring the Solea Valley and its UNESCO-listed Byzantine churches, tucked into the hills of the northern Troodos.
The route
From Kakopetria, the road follows the Solea Valley to the neighboring village of Galata and on to Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, looping back for about 24 km with 400 m of combined elevation gain. The route alternates gentle climbs between villages with rolling stretches along the Karyotis River.
How to approach the ride
No particular technical difficulty — a standard road bike handles this comfortably, with grades staying moderate throughout. Traffic, generally light outside peak summer, makes for an easy, relaxed ride from village to village.
When to go
April to October, with spring bringing especially lush greenery along the Karyotis River. Cooler autumn also suits this rolling, low-difficulty route well.
Good to know
Old Kakopetria, with its traditional timber-framed houses lining the river, is worth a walking detour before or after the ride. Galata, a few kilometers away, also holds several painted chapels that see far fewer visitors than the one at Kakopetria.
