Road

Above Toulon’s harbour, Mont Faron strings together tight switchbacks through scrubby garrigue with sweeping views over the Mediterranean — a Var cycling classic.

A short but sustained ascent

From Toulon, it’s 6 km for 435 m of elevation gain, averaging 7.3%, with a steeper stretch around 10% through the middle section. The road winds through roughly fifteen hairpin bends before reaching the summit.

A Paris-Nice regular

Mont Faron has repeatedly shaped the Paris-Nice and Tour Méditerranéen general classification, and already featured on the Tour de France route back in 1957 — a short climb, but selective enough to open gaps.

How to approach the ride

A compact chainset is usually enough, but a cycling computer with gradient display helps pace the 10% sections without blowing up before the top.

When to climb it

March to November: the road is open year-round, but it’s best to avoid the strong afternoon heat of high summer on this south-facing, exposed slope.

Good to know

The summit holds the Provence landing memorial and offers a full panorama over Toulon’s harbour, the Îles d’Hyères and, on a clear day, Corsica in the distance.

Is there another way up besides cycling?+

A cable car also links Toulon to the summit, a handy option for a light-legged descent after climbing, or for visiting the Provence landing memorial installed at the top.
