Shipka Pass links Gabrovo to Kazanlak across the Stara Planina, the long mountain range running east–west through Bulgaria. This category 1 climb, steeped in history, tops out at 1,187 m beside the Freedom Monument.

The climb profile

From Gabrovo, the road climbs 14.1 km for 698 m of elevation gain, rising from 490 m to 1,187 m, at an average of 4.7% with a maximum of 5.8%. The gradient is steady with no real flat sections, making it easy to settle into a rhythm through the beech and conifer forests typical of the Stara Planina.

A pass steeped in history

The pass owes its fame to the Battle of Shipka in 1877, when Russian troops and Bulgarian volunteers repelled repeated Ottoman assaults during the Russo-Turkish War, an episode regarded as a founding moment of modern Bulgarian independence. The Freedom Monument, an imposing stone obelisk built in 1934, dominates the pass and can be visited on foot from the summit car park via a staircase of several hundred steps.

On the road

The surface is in good condition and reasonably wide for a mountain pass, with moderate traffic outside July and August. Gabrovo, the start town, is known for its House of Humour and Satire museum and its Bulgarian National Revival architecture, making it a good base for combining the ride with some sightseeing.

Good to know

May to October is the safest window: the road can be snowy or icy in winter in this part of the central Balkans. The summit, busy with tour buses in summer, offers open views over the surrounding valleys and the battle panorama museum a little further down on the Kazanlak side.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Shipka Pass such an important historic site in Bulgaria?+

In 1877, a small force of Russian soldiers and Bulgarian volunteers held out for several days against the Ottoman army in a decisive battle of the Russo-Turkish War. The Freedom Monument, a stone obelisk visible from the road, now stands atop the pass in memory of this founding episode of Bulgarian independence.

Is Shipka Pass rideable year-round?+

No — the road stays open but can ice over or see snow from November to March in this part of the Stara Planina, which tops out above 1,100 m here. The best window for climbing is May to October, with a summer tourist peak around the monument in July and August.
