The Skellig Ring, in County Kerry, offers a quieter alternative to the famous Ring of Kerry: a coastal loop that follows the Atlantic facing the pyramid-shaped silhouettes of the Skellig Islands, made world-famous by their appearance in Star Wars.

A coastal road facing the Skellig Islands

From Cahersiveen, the road follows the coast toward Portmagee and then Valentia Island, offering regular views over the Atlantic Ocean and, on a clear day, the distinctive silhouette of Skellig Michael offshore. Expect around 30 km and 500 m of elevation gain for the full loop, on a rolling profile typical of the Iveragh Peninsula.

Getting the ride right

Atlantic weather can change very quickly in Kerry, with frequent showers even in summer: a light, easily packable rain jacket is essential. Wind, sometimes strong on the most exposed sections of coast, can also slow progress noticeably.

When to go

April to October, with summer offering the best chances of clear conditions to enjoy the views of the Skellig Islands. Spring and early autumn, less busy with tourism, allow for riding on quieter roads.

Good to know

Cahersiveen and Portmagee, departure points for boat trips to Skellig Michael, offer a decent choice of accommodation, with convenient access to the rest of the Ring of Kerry for extending the stay on the Iveragh Peninsula.

Frequently asked questions

Why choose the Skellig Ring over the classic Ring of Kerry?+

The Skellig Ring, a shorter loop via Portmagee and Valentia Island, avoids the main N70 road, often clogged with tour coaches circling the Ring of Kerry in high season. Cyclists find quieter roads here while still enjoying similar views over the Atlantic.

What is Skellig Michael, visible from the road?+

This pyramid-shaped island off the coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site for its 6th-century early Christian monastery, has gained recent worldwide fame as a filming location for several Star Wars films — a recognisable silhouette from several viewpoints along the Skellig Ring.
