Štrbské Pleso, a glacial lake nestled at 1,355 m of altitude in the High Tatras, offers one of Slovakia’s highest bike climbs, at the heart of a range that tops out at over 2,600 m.
A climb to a high-altitude lake
From Štrba, the road climbs 18 km for 600 m of elevation gain up to the Štrbské Pleso resort, through conifer forests typical of the Tatras that gradually give way to high-mountain terrain. The glacial lake, surrounded by peaks over 2,500 m, offers a spectacular viewpoint over the Slovak side of the range.
Getting the ride right
A compact or triple crankset is recommended for this high-altitude climb by Slovak standards. Mountain weather can change quickly even in summer: warm layers remain useful for the descent.
When to go
May to October, as the road stays rideable for most of the year but can be snow-covered outside this window at this altitude. Summer offers the best conditions for enjoying views of the surrounding peaks.
Good to know
Štrba, at the foot of the massif, offers convenient train access to the Tatra resorts, with Vysoké Tatry, a municipality grouping several mountain villages, for extending the stay in the High Tatras.
