This stage crosses Castelsarrasin then Montech, where a decommissioned “water slope” still stands, a 20th-century engineering device designed to carry barges over a significant drop in elevation without multiplying conventional locks — a rare industrial curiosity on the French canal network.

The scenery gradually turns more urban approaching Toulouse, while still keeping the continuous shade of the plane trees that characterises the canal for nearly its entire length.

Arriving in Toulouse, the “Pink City” nicknamed for the pink brick typical of its architecture, marks the central point of the route: this is where the Canal latéral à la Garonne gives way to the Canal du Midi proper, heading toward the Mediterranean.

Indicative distance for this stretch.
