In the Ariège massif, Col d’Agnès offers one of the most wide-open views in the central Pyrenees, at the cost of an ascent that barely lets up.
A demanding ascent from Aulus-les-Bains
From Aulus-les-Bains, it’s 10.2 km for 826 m of elevation gain, averaging 8.1%, with sections above 10% from the opening kilometres. The summit, at 1,570 m, offers a clear view over the surrounding ridgelines.
An Ariège cycling classic
Col d’Agnès is among the climbs regularly used by the Tour de France in this part of the Pyrenees, often paired with neighbouring Col de Latrape and Port de Lers to form particularly selective stages.
How to approach the ride
A compact chainset helps get through the 10%+ ramps at the bottom of the ascent, and a packable windbreaker is worth carrying on the exposed upper slopes, which are often swept by wind.
When to climb it
May to October: the road stays rideable through the warm season, but the exposed summit ridges can be cool even in summer, especially early in the morning.
Good to know
Col d’Agnès lends itself well to a loop with Col de Latrape and Port de Lers, a stretch of Ariège cols quieter than the bigger Pyrenean passes further west.
