The Grand Ballon, the highest point of the Vosges range at 1,424 m, holds a special place in Alsatian cycling. Less known nationally than the great Alpine or Pyrenean passes, it remains a demanding climb and one of the must-do rides of the Haut-Rhin’s sportive calendar.
The profile from Willer-sur-Thur
From Willer-sur-Thur, expect 19 km and 1,170 m of climbing, averaging 6.2% with no real flat section across the ascent. The road crosses fir forest first before opening onto clear ridgelines in the final third, with views reaching the Alsace plain and, on a clear day, sometimes the Alps.
Getting the ride right
The steady gradient demands a constant rhythm over nearly an hour of effort, with no marked recovery section. The exposed summit ridges can make the final kilometres noticeably cooler than the valley, even in high summer.
When to go
May to October, with a peak in July-August during regional sportive events. The road stays rideable earlier in the season than the great Alpine passes, the Vosges range being more modest in altitude.
Good to know
Thann, at the foot of the climb, offers a decent choice of accommodation with direct access to the Route des Crêtes and the rest of the Vosges range to extend the trip over several days.
